cangaceiros

WORK IN PROGRESS

“Conheceu que morreu?” Or, “did you know that you died?” Were the final words one would hear at the hands of a Cangaceiro, a folkloric Brazilian entity that can be compared to, in some respects, to the North American Western Outlaw.

The mask represents a Cangaceiro. A particular Cangaceiro known as Corisco, the notorious historical figure and fictional character in Glauber Rocha's Black God, White Devil (1964). The intent of a dynamic structure/mask was to bring this character to life, building bridges between past and present; life and death. This mask was built to be worn. It has a moveable jaw structure and was created with cardboard strips and hot glue; painted with gouache and coloured pencils.
